EUROPA SCHOOL UK

I was invited to read my book, Willy and Wally the Windscreen Wipers to 2 reception classes, separately, on the 4th July 2022 at the wonderful Europa School UK. The school is a couple of miles from Abingdon-on-Thames, near Culham. The children were the same age as my granddaughter, around 4 years old and so I was really looking forward to reading my book to them to see and hear their reactions. After all, they’re my target audience!

The teachers for the two classes were Sally (English and Spanish speaking class) and Hannah (English and French speaking class).

Both teachers were fantastic and I thank them for allowing me into their very busy schedules.

There were 30 children in each class making 60 in all. I wanted the children to enjoy the story and so I asked them if they would like to join in. “Yeees!” they all replied. So, in a key part of the story I asked them to say the words with me. We had a couple of practices before I began. “Now when you hear these words, we all shout this!” (Don’t worry, no spoilers!) They were very enthusiastic and sat quietly while I read to them. When it was their turn to join in they did it brilliantly and very loudly, in both classes.

Hearing the sound of all their young voices shouting at once was amazing.

“The children really loved the book. They particularly loved joining in and wanted Kevin to read it again” said one of the teachers.

Thanks again to the teachers and pupils of Europa School. In addition, I would also like to thank Susi Dalton of Europa School UK who organised the whole thing. Thanks Susi.
